Melanoma

A potentially lethal form of skin cancer

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer which form from pigment-containing skin cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes produce the dark pigment, melanin, which is responsible for the color of the skin.

Melanoma is less common than other skin cancers. However, it is much more dangerous, if it is not detected in the early stages. According to the study "Early detection and treatment of skin cancer" by A.F. Jerant, J.T. Johnson, C.D. Sheridan and T.J. Caffrey the majority (75%) of deaths related to skin cancer are caused by melanoma.
